The difference between training outdoors and in the gym; while citing generational gaps, busy lifestyles, different environments and technological changes.
As a personal trainer, training outdoors offers me dynamic environment where I can engage with nature while using the equipment and the facilities that I have around me having the discipline to train in all kinds of weather.
This variability enhances my functional fitness, balance, and mental resilience. In contrast, when I work out in the gym, it provides a controlled setting with access to specialized equipment, allowing me to target specific muscle groups and systematically track my progress.
Growing up in Africa I realised that the natural athletes were the local people who relied on manual labour and outdoor activities for fitness often develop practical strength, endurance, and agility while doing daily tasks for livelihood and survival.
Their fitness was due to their lifestyle, a major aspect of fitness/training leading to well-rounded physical capabilities without structured training programs.
I believe athletes who combine gym workouts with manual labour can achieve a unique blend of functional and specialised strength, benefiting from both real-world physical demands and targeted exercise routines.
I have also realised that past generations engaged in manual labour as a necessity, naturally integrating physical activity into their daily lives. Past generations constantly learnt new skills while maintaining their fitness without the need for additional exercise regimes.
In contrast, modern lifestyles often involve sedentary work, prompting many to seek out gyms, resulting in calisthenics becoming very popular with people over the years to compensate for their inactivity.
This shift highlights a move from incidental to intentional exercise in different environments reflecting changes in lifestyle technological implementation busy lifestyles environments and daily routines.
Natural athletes and those combining manual labour with gym workouts develop diverse skill sets, influenced by their activities. The evolution from labour-intensive lifestyles to more sedentary ones underscore the importance of deliberate fitness practices in maintaining health and well-being today.
Both outdoor and gym training offer distinct advantages. However, busy lifestyles and living in urban environments due to modernisation, not everyone can train outdoors.
